A lot of sites assume it's a hard rule and it isn't quite. WSH Council's own guideline on forklift trucks lists "always wear a seatbelt when operating a forklift" as an operator duty — in "should" language, as part of an Approved Code of Practice, not as a standalone offence with its own fine the way a car seat belt law works. There's even a recognised carve-out in the guideline for specific risk-assessed situations, like working near a wharf edge, where staying belted in could be the wrong call.

What that means in practice: there's no seat-belt ticket for a forklift the way there is for a car. But an Approved Code of Practice carries real weight if MOM or a court ever looks at an incident — whether the company followed recognised practice becomes evidence of whether it met its general safety duty. Treat it as close to mandatory for that reason, even without a specific fine attached. The daily pre-use check already asks whether the belt is "accessible and not damaged, oily or dirty" — this is the hardware that check is checking.

What is the penalty in Singapore if a forklift operator is injured and was not wearing a seat belt?

The exposure does not come from a seat belt fine, it comes from the Workplace Safety and Health Act. Under the WSH Act a body corporate can be fined up to S$500,000, and an individual, including a director or manager, up to S$200,000 or two years' imprisonment or both. Separately, MOM raised the maximum fine under the WSH Act's subsidiary legislation from S$20,000 to S$50,000 with effect from 1 June 2024. Whether the company followed the Approved Code of Practice is evidence of whether it met its general safety duty, which is why an unworn seat belt matters even without a ticket attached to it.

What is a forklift seat belt interlock?

It is a seat belt wired into the truck's drive circuit. If the operator has not buckled up, the forklift will not travel. It removes the gap between the rule and what actually happens on the floor, which is where most seat belt compliance fails.
