What to check before you buy any used forklift
Whether you buy from us or from somebody else, these are the things that decide whether a used truck is a bargain or a liability. Ask for all of them in writing.
1. The hour meter, and whether it is believable
Hours are to a forklift what mileage is to a car. A single-shift warehouse truck typically runs about 1,000 to 1,500 hours a year, so a five-year-old machine showing 2,000 hours has either been lightly used or the meter has been changed. Ask what the truck did before, not just what the meter says. A 6,000-hour truck that did clean indoor pallet work is usually a better buy than a 3,000-hour truck that lived outdoors on rough ground.
2. On an electric truck, the age of the battery
This is the one most buyers miss. On a used electric forklift the traction battery can be worth a large share of the whole machine, and a lead-acid battery has a working life of roughly five years or about 1,500 charge cycles. A cheap truck with a tired battery is not cheap. Ask for the battery date, whether the cells have been watered properly, and what a replacement would cost before you agree a price.
3. Mast wear, chains and the lift cylinder
Watch the mast go all the way up and all the way down, loaded. It should move smoothly with no snatching and no jerking as the stages pass each other. Then leave the forks raised for a few minutes and look for drift, which points at the cylinder seals. Chains stretch with age and should be checked against the manufacturer's wear limit rather than by eye.
4. Tyres, and which type is fitted
Cushion tyres are for smooth indoor floors, pneumatic for yards and rough ground. Fitting the wrong type is common on resold trucks and it ruins both the ride and the tyre. Tyres are also the cheapest thing on this list to put right, so worn tyres are a negotiating point rather than a reason to walk away.
5. What "reconditioned" actually meant
The word has no legal meaning in Singapore and is used to describe everything from a full workshop overhaul to a wash and a coat of paint. Ask for the job sheet. If a seller cannot show you what was replaced, assume nothing was.
What decides the price of a used forklift
Two trucks of the same age and capacity can be far apart on price. What moves it:
