Forklift Battery Maintenance in Singapore
A forklift battery is usually the most expensive single part of an electric truck, and most of them die years early for reasons that cost nothing to avoid. This is what to check, how often, and what Singapore’s heat does to the numbers.
The short version
Check the water weekly. Top up after a full charge, never before. Do not run the battery below about 20 percent. Let every charge finish. Keep the top of the battery clean and dry. Use the charger that came with the pack.
That is the whole of it. Everything below is why, and what it costs when it is not done.
Why Singapore is harder on a battery than the manual assumes
Most forklift battery guidance is written for temperate climates. Singapore sits near 27°C and high humidity all year, and heat drives two things: water is lost faster from a lead-acid battery, and a battery already warm from working is then asked to absorb the heat of a charge on top of that.
The practical consequence is that a battery a European manual says to water monthly often needs checking fortnightly here. Go by the level, not by the calendar. If you are topping up far more than the manual suggests, that is normal in this climate. If one truck is drinking noticeably more than the one beside it, that battery is probably being overcharged and is worth a look.
The watering rules, in order
- Charge first. Water second. Electrolyte expands as it charges. Fill a discharged cell to the mark and it pushes acid out of the vents when it charges — which loses acid, corrodes the tray, and leaves you with a weaker battery than you started with.
- Fill only to the indicator, not to the top of the cell. Most batteries have a level ring or an eye. If yours does not, cover the plates by roughly 10 to 15 mm.
- Distilled or deionised water only. Tap water carries minerals that plate onto the cells and permanently reduce capacity. That cannot be undone.
- Never add acid. A battery loses water, not acid. Adding acid raises the concentration and eats the plates.
- Never let the plates dry out. A plate exposed to air even briefly is damaged for good. A cell low enough to show its plates needs looking at, not just topping up.
Charging: the part most operations get wrong
For a lead-acid battery:
- Charge at about 20 to 30 percent remaining, not when it dies. Deep discharge is the fastest way to lose cycles.
- Let the charge finish. Pulling the truck off charge at lunch to move one more pallet is the most expensive pallet of the day.
- Do not opportunity charge during short breaks. Lead-acid is not built for it, and repeated partial charges leave the lower plates sulphated.
- Let it cool before working it hard. A battery straight off charge is hot, and heat is what you are trying to avoid.
For lithium iron phosphate, almost all of that reverses: it is designed for top-up charging during breaks, it does not want to be run flat, and it needs no watering at all. Choosing between the two is a separate question, and we have written it up in lithium or lead-acid for a Singapore warehouse.
Ventilation, because this one is a safety matter
A lead-acid battery gives off hydrogen while it charges, and hydrogen is flammable. The charging area needs ventilation and needs to stay clear of naked flames, sparks, grinding and smoking. Keep it uncluttered so gas is not trapped, and do not charge in a closed store room with no airflow.
Lithium iron phosphate does not vent hydrogen. That is one of the real operational reasons warehouses move to it — the truck can charge in the aisle instead of needing a dedicated charging room.
What to check, and how often

These checks sit inside the ordinary service visit — they are part of what a forklift maintenance contract covers, so they happen whether or not anyone remembers.
The five things that actually kill batteries
In the order we meet them:
- Running it flat, below about 20 percent, repeatedly.
- Interrupted charges, stopping the charge to get one more job done.
- Watering before charging instead of after, which loses acid every time.
- A dirty battery top, free to fix, and quietly draining the pack.
- The wrong charger, the most common reason a warranty claim is refused on either chemistry.
None of those need a technician. They need somebody to own the job.
What it costs
Battery replacement at M&C starts from $180, and the real figure depends on the truck, the pack and the chemistry. A preventive maintenance visit is from $80 and includes the battery check, and there is no call-out fee, so you pay for the work rather than for the van arriving.
For scale, manufacturers generally rate a well-maintained lead-acid forklift battery at around 1,500 charge cycles — roughly five years in single-shift use — with lithium iron phosphate rated several times higher. Those are manufacturer figures, not M&C measurements. What is not in dispute is that the five habits above decide whether a battery reaches its rating or dies at half of it.
