Your electric forklift dies at 3pm, the spare battery is still on charge, and the dock is backing up.
That one moment is what the whole lithium against lead-acid argument is really about. Not chemistry. Shift coverage.
The Short Answer
One shift a day with the truck idle overnight, lead-acid is usually still the cheaper answer. Two shifts or more, or any operation that swaps batteries, and lithium normally wins. Lithium costs more to buy. It gets that money back through charging time, floor space and the labour you stop spending on battery handling, not through the battery price.

The Costs Nobody Puts in the Quote
Compare only the two battery prices and lead-acid wins every time. The problem is that a lead-acid battery brings a small operation with it, and none of that shows up on the invoice.
- The charging area. Lead-acid gives off hydrogen while charging, so it needs a dedicated, ventilated space kept clear of sparks and flames, with acid handling and spill kit. In Singapore, floor area is the expensive part of a warehouse. A charging room is floor area you are not storing pallets on.
- The spare battery. Multi-shift sites usually buy a second battery so one can charge while the other works. That is a second capital purchase plus somewhere to park it on a stand.
- The changeover. Swapping a battery is a manual job with a hoist or a transfer trolley, several times a week, done by someone you are paying to move stock instead.
- The watering. Topping up cells and running equalising charges takes discipline. Miss it and the battery quietly loses life. It is the most common reason a lead-acid battery dies early.
Where Lead-Acid Still Makes Sense

- Single shift, predictable hours. If the truck stops at 6pm and starts at 8am, an overnight charge is free time. Lithium's fast charging solves a problem you do not have.
- Lower entry cost. If capital is the binding constraint this year, lead-acid gets a working truck on your floor for less money today.
- An existing fleet. If you already own chargers, stands and spare lead-acid batteries, switching one truck to lithium means new chargers too.
- Counterweight. On some counterbalance trucks the lead-acid battery doubles as ballast. A lighter lithium pack can need compensating weight, so check truck by truck.
Why Lithium Iron Phosphate, Not Just "Lithium"
Not all lithium is the same, and this matters for a warehouse.
Material handling batteries are usually lithium iron phosphate, written LiFePO4. It is the more thermally stable lithium chemistry. Published figures put its thermal runaway threshold around 270°C, against roughly 210°C for the NMC chemistry used in many consumer applications. In a hot, humid Singapore warehouse that margin is the point.
LiFePO4 also holds a flat voltage curve, so the truck lifts at nearly the same speed at 20 percent charge as it does at 90 percent. Operators notice this before anyone reads a spec sheet, because the last hour of the shift stops feeling slow.
Battery Care That Applies Either Way
Whichever chemistry you run, most early battery deaths are avoidable.
- Do not run a lead-acid battery flat. Deep discharging below about 20 percent is the fastest way to lose cycles.
- Charge lead-acid fully, then let it cool. Interrupted charges and hot batteries both cost life.
- Water after charging, never before. Topping up a discharged cell causes overflow when it charges and expands.
- Keep the tops clean and dry. Acid and dust across the terminals is a slow self-discharge path, and a corrosion problem.
- Use the matched charger. A charger that does not match the pack is the most common cause of both lithium and lead-acid warranty rejections.

Try It Before You Commit
Battery choice is a five to eight year decision usually made from a brochure. Renting an electric truck for a few months tells you what a spec sheet cannot: whether your shift pattern really needs fast charging, and whether your charging point is in the right place on the floor.

Is a lithium forklift battery worth it in Singapore?
On one shift a day with an idle overnight, usually not. On two or three shifts, on sites that swap batteries, or where a charging room is eating floor space you pay rent on, usually yes. The payback comes from time, space and labour rather than from the battery price.
How long does a lithium forklift battery last compared to lead-acid?
Industry figures put a well-maintained lead-acid battery at roughly 1,000 to 1,500 charge cycles, commonly three to five years of service. LiFePO4 packs are typically rated for 2,000 to 5,000 cycles. Treat both as planning ranges. How hard the truck is worked matters more than the label.
Can you fast charge a forklift battery during a break?
With lithium, yes, and the battery stays in the truck. With lead-acid, no. It is built for a full charge of about eight to ten hours followed by a cooling period, and repeated partial fast charges shorten its life.
Does a lithium forklift battery need a charging room?
No. Lithium packs are sealed and do not vent hydrogen while charging, so they do not need the ventilated charging area, eyewash station and acid handling lead-acid requires. You still need a safe, dry charging point and proper electrical work.
What maintenance does a lithium forklift battery need?
No watering, no equalising, no acid cleaning. The truck itself still needs normal preventive maintenance, because hydraulics, brakes, chains, tyres and mast rollers wear the same either way. Our PM contracts start from $80 per service visit.

Do not start from the chemistry. Start from your shift pattern and your floor plan. Count the hours your team loses to batteries in a normal week. If that number is small, lead-acid is fine and cheaper. If it is a shift's worth, lithium is not a green upgrade, it is an operations fix.
